How to Reduce Your Risk of Preeclampsia

The incidence of preeclampsia tends to be higher in women with history of preeclampsia, chronic hypertension, and multiple gestations. Whereas researchers continue to study ways to prevent preeclampsia, no clear strategies have emerged. But that’s not to say you should give up since predicting preeclampsia earlier enough increases your chances of overcoming the health complication.

Some studies seem to suggest that there is an association between Vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of preeclampsia. However, other researchers believe there is an association between taking vitamin D supplements and lower risk of preeclampsia. That said, today will take you through some of the ways to reduce your risk of preeclampsia. Keep reading to find out more.

    Calcium Supplements

You might not know this, but calcium supplements can play a vital role in making sure you prevent preeclampsia. That’s mostly the case in populations where women do not get enough calcium during pregnancy through their diets. Either way, it is unlikely that women from developed counties would experience calcium deficiency to the extent that calcium supplements would prove beneficial.

    Low-Dose Aspirin

If you happen to experience certain risk factors including a history of preeclampsia, kidney disease, autoimmune disease, or chronic high blood pressure, then your doctor may recommend a daily low-dose aspirin. This is mostly the case after 12 weeks of pregnancy. Aspirin helps keep your blood thin while at the same time reducing preterm preeclampsia among high-risk women.

Never should you make the risk of taking any medications, vitamins or supplements without first talking to your doctor. The vast majority of women who do that end up regretting their decision in the long run. Before you become pregnant, it is advisable that you be as healthy as you can be. This is mostly the case if you have had preeclampsia before.

    The Bottom Line

Reducing your risk of preeclampsia does not have to be stressful as some people make it sound. Provided you understand what is expected of you, it will only be a matter of time before you finally keep your health in check.  Once you’re pregnant, ensure you take care of yourself and your baby through early and regular prenatal care.

By predicting preeclampsia early, you and your doctor can work together to prevent preeclampsia. Actually, you can use this as the perfect opportunity to make the best choices for you and your baby.
